Artist Jess's When a Young Lad Dreams of Manhood... (c. 1958) is a collaged hardcover book with 18 pages of varying size. In this essay, Davies looks closely and thoughtfully at Jess's When a Young Lad..., taking apart the collaged cut-outs and paste-ups to explore homoerotic desire, friendships and society in 1950s America. We are exceptionally grateful to Davies for sharing his writing on Jess and this significant work in the Belkin's collection.
